You can use this handy calculator to estimate the cost of rewriting your own legacy applications.
We've included some industry averages for basic assumptions, but you should at a minimum change the size of the application (measured by 1000 lines of code, or KLOC) and the fully burdened cost of your developers (take an average of the team members you expect on the project).
We've done some research to put in default data about developer productivity, defect rates, and so forth. Of course, you may very well disagree with our assumptions, so we've made it easy for you to override them and generate numbers for your own app. The calculator is a simple Excel worksheet you can download and plug in your own data and assumptions.
